Invented by the American String Teachers Association mother-daughter teaching team of Ruth and Martha Brons, these are teacher designed, tested and approved as the gentlest, fastest way for beginning players to learn a relaxed and effective bow hold.
These accessories allow a relaxed bow hold reinforcing and supporting the work that has been done in the lesson. They uniquely train the hand to hold the bow correctly and naturally, through muscle memory, thereby freeing the player to learn and enjoy other elements of string playing.
Great also for those who teach in groups using either Suzuki or other methods. The cost of the Bow Hold Buddies or Cellophant accessory is only that of an hours tuition or less.
The aim of these accessories is not to replace the effective teaching of a bow hold, but to support students and their parents in between lessons and to support teachers who teach groups.

A 2-piece bow accessory set which includes the frog and the fish.
Instantly positions and supports all the fingers to give a relaxed bow hold.

These accessories do not preclude normal points of contact with the stick; they simply prevent the thumb, index and pinky fingers from wandering out of position.
With these three fingers in place and in control of the stick, the middle two fingers, hand and bow arm are more relaxed and ready to learn the beginning bow strokes.
These accessories train the hand to hold the bow correctly and naturally through muscle memory. They free the player to learn and enjoy other elements of string playing.

This bow accessory can instantly position and support the pinky finger of the bow hold

Directs the tip of the pinky to slightly to the rear of the top of the stick.
The sloped walls of the pinky-tip opening allow for finger flexibility.
This accessory slides securely along the stick to rest next to the ring finger, allowing for a custom fit for all hand sizes, age 3 through to adult.
This placement allows for the points of contact of the index and pinky fingers to be equi-distant to that of the thumb.

The Cellophant instantly positions and supports the fingers of the bow hold. The various anatomical features of the elephant, such as toenails and legs, allow the cellist to feel reference points, for consistent bow holds from practice to practice.
The size of the CelloPhant ® accessory allows an open, relaxed hand, and the circle of the elephant's trunk directs a flexible thumb toward the intersection of the frog and stick, with alternate placements if desired.
The bow provides the breath of tone for string players. While cello bow technique varies widely among fine players, all agree a primary focus of the cello bow hold is lack of tension, and a flexible thumb and fingers.
Teachers appreciate the flexible-use design of this accessory, allowing for differences of pronation, depending on their own bow technique and student hand size.
The accessory is useful for all hand sizes, age 3 through Adult. Teachers of very young cellists have discovered the special features Martha Brons designed in the accessory for the very youngest Suzuki cello students: an alternate thumb location is to roll thumb tip around elephant's cheek (or between cheek and ear); and young ring fingers like to rest on the top edge of the elephant's leg. Best tone results when the bow is rested on the string before the right hand is placed.
The accessory also is designed to deliberately add a touch of weight to assist beginning players to achieve a bit more effortless tone.
